MTP Kit and Incomplete Abortion

Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) kit comes with a set of abortion pills called as

Mifepristone and Misoprostol medicines that are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug

Administration for conducting medication abortion. Medication abortion is a medical

intervention to terminate pregnancies in their early gestation periods i.e., from 5 to 12

weeks. One can buy MTP kit online or from any hospital or clinic with a doctor’s

prescription.

The other alternative for medication abortion are in-clinic or surgical abortions. Suction

abortion (vacuum aspiration) and Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) are two types of in-clinic

abortions that are recommended till 14 to 16 weeks and in the second trimester of

pregnancy respectively. Whatever the abortion type may be, it is to be carried out only after

a medical examination is conducted.

In case of meditation abortion, a patient understands the instructions about the abortion

procedure from the doctor and buy cheap MTP kit online to use. If the patient is unclear

about any step or faces any difficulty administering the process on their own, then they

should call their doctor immediately. The procedure to use an MTP kit is as follows -

1. Take Mifepristone (200 mg tablet) orally with water after having food. Once you take

this medicine you will experience slight spotting or bleeding. The function of this

medicine is to break the uterus lining by stopping the action of the pregnancy

hormone progesterone.

2. After 24 to 48 hours duration of taking Mifepristone, insert 4 tablets of Misoprostol

(200 mcg each) into the vagina. This will cause stomach cramps and you will

experience bleeding that is slightly more than your normal menstrual bleeding.

Misoprostol medicines act to create contractions in the uterus and expel out the

pregnancy tissues.

If the patient notices any abnormal symptoms like heavy flooding (soaking of 2 or more

large pads in an hour) for 2 hours, passing huge blood clots, high fever, or any symptoms

other than those mentioned by the doctor, then immediate medical care should be given.

Incomplete Abortion

Incomplete abortion is a situation where the pregnancy tissues have not been completely

expelled out of the body. This occurrence is very rare in case of surgical abortions as manual

suction or tools like cannula, curette, etc. are used to pull out the pregnancy tissues out of

the body.

But sometimes when using an MTP kit online, one dose of Misoprostol is not enough to

expel all the pregnancy tissues, and some part of the fetus, uterus lining or placenta remain

inside the womb. This can cause risks like infection, very heavy bleeding, uterine

perforation, damage of cervical tissues, etc. At times, if the fetus is not dead and the

pregnancy continues, then it may result in birth defects in the child.

During incomplete abortion, the doctor may, at their discretion, recommend an additional

dose of Misoprostol tablets if the pregnancy period is under 12 weeks and the condition of

the patient seems stable. Under other conditions, a doctor may use gentle suction or

dilation and curettage method to empty the uterus.
